INSPIRED BY A THIRST TO CREATE GREAT ALT-COUNTRY MUSIC
Founded in 2004 by multi-instrumentalist Andre Skinner, Canteen Knockout is
Toronto’s most original alt-country sound. The title of the band’s first full-length CD,
Navajo Steel, is a glimpse into the vibe of Canteen Knockout: beautifully-crafted yet
high-energy music inspired by long journeys along the road less traveled through hot,
dry places; and a thirst that can never be fully quenched.
Canteen Knockout’s most notable exposure to date was their opening performance for
Great Big Sea at The Molson Amphitheatre in 2005; they have also set the table for
Moe Berg and Pursuit of Happiness. Their passionate and rapidly growing fan base
has also regularly packed essential Toronto rock clubs such as The Silver Dollar
Room, The Horseshoe Tavern, and the Cadillac Lounge. Now, as one might expect
from a band like Canteen Knockout, they are poised to hit the road and make the world
their own “alt country”. A well-received performance in Nashville, Tennessee is evidence
that the world on a much larger scale is ready to embrace the Canteen
Knockout sound.
INTRODUCING CANTEEN KNOCKOUT :
Andre Skinner: lead vocals & rhythm guitar
A veteran of the Toronto indie scene, André has built his potent mix of guitar, vocal
and percussion sensibilities with the likes of Pope Factory, Slit Slot and many other
outfits whose sounds ranged power pop to jazz. These diverse influences have helped
him guide Canteen Knockout’s sound and distinguish it with unique vocal tones and
edgy, catchy melodies.
Alex Maxymiw: pedal steel, lead guitar & backup vocals
A 15-year veteran of life on the road, Alex is a former member of Luther Wright
and
the Wrongs, best known for having reworked Pink Floyd’s seminal album “The Wall”
into an acclaimed country masterpiece. This experience amongst many others makes
him an ideal addition to Canteen Knockout’s creative inner circle.
Scott Whitmore: electric bass
Scott is a strong believer in simplicity and applies it to his rock-solid country-rock bass
grooves for Canteen Knockout.
Jake Adams: drums
Del Shannon and Doug And The Slugs top the list of Canadian roots heavyweights with
whom Jake has developed his distinctive style; playing coast-to-coast and opening
for acts such as Tanya Tucker, Eddie Money and the Stampeders.
